Robinhood Targets Indonesia’s Growing Crypto by Acquiring Buana Capital Sekuritas and PT Pedagang Aset Kripto
The Indonesian crypto market is rapidly growing, with nearly 20 million crypto investors and strong consumer protection from the Financial Services Authority (Otoritas Jasa Keuangan, OJK). PT Buana Capital Sekuritas, the licensed securities firm, and PT Pedagang Aset Kripto, the company licensed to operate as a crypto asset trader, are two of the major players in Indonesia.
The acquisition of these firms allows Robinhood to offer equities and cryptocurrencies to Indonesia’s large and growing base of retail investors without building anything from the ground up. According to Patrick Chan, Head of Asia at Robinhood, Indonesia’s fast-growing market will make it an exciting place to further Robinhood’s mission to democratize finance for all.
Robinhood expects the finalization of the approval by OJK and other regulatory approvals in early 2026, and to continue offering Indonesian financial products through Buana Capital. Later, the company will shift to offer Robinhood brokerage and crypto trading products, connecting the Indonesian customers to US equities.

Robinhood’s Global Expansion Follows the Trend Set by U.S. Crypto Companies
Founded in 2013 by Vladimir Tenev and Baiju Bhatt, Robinhood was initially designed as a mobile-friendly trading platform and later developed into one of the most prominent trading platforms in the U.S. In 2024, the company started expanding its services to the global realm by launching in the United Kingdom, and it witnessed a revenue of $2.95 billion in the same year. In 2025, it continued its expansion by launching in Lithuania and now in Indonesia.
The press release by Robinhood states that the entry into Indonesia will accelerate the expansion across Southeast Asia and globally. It follows the pattern of several other U.S. crypto companies, including Gemini, Coinbase, and Panthera. While not a crypto exchange, Ripple Labs was one of the early crypto-based companies to expand its services to Southeast Asia. In 2017, Ripple inaugurated its headquarters in Singapore to cover the Asia-Pacific, and in 2025, it secured approval from the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) to expand the service.
Since jurisdictions like Singapore, Hong Kong, and Indonesia offer clear regulatory frameworks for crypto, we can expect more companies to join the race due to extremely favourable conditions.
