What is the Clash Royale Game?

Clash Royale is a strategy game developed and published by Supercell that combines elements of various games, including collectible cards, defense, and multiplayer online battle games. It is a spinoff of the critically acclaimed Clash of Clans series.

The mobile-only game was released for iOS and Android in March 2016 and has been widely successful, becoming the most downloaded and top-grossing app in the US iOS App Store quickly after launch. It is estimated that more than 100 million players are actively playing Clash Royale.

Its popularity is so massive that since 2018, there has been an annual esports world championship called The Clash Royale League, where the best Clash Royale players from North America, Europe, Latin America, and China pit against each other to become champions.

Clash Royale Gameplay

Clash Royale Characters

Clash Royale is a tower rush video game where players engage in 1v1 or 2v2 battles to destroy more towers than their opponents. The towers are called ‘Crowns’, and each player’s goal is to ultimately destroy the other’s ‘King Tower’, resulting in an instant victory.

The matches are three minutes long, with a two-minute overtime to decide the winner if it’s a draw. If both players have the same number of destroyed crowns or none at all, the match goes into overtime, where the player who brings down a crown first is declared the winner. If no crowns are destroyed in overtime, the game decides the winner by automatically destroying towers with the lowest health points, and the player with the highest crown health points wins the match. If both players end the game with the same health points, then it is a draw.

Clash Royale ranks players based on the trophies they have won and the matches they have lost in multiplayer battles. Players can enhance the strength of their King Towers with Experience Points (EP), earned by upgrading playable cards. The maximum level a player can reach in the game is 70, while King Towers can reach level 15.

The cards represent the playable troops, buildings, and spells, with many of them derived from Supercell’s previous hit game, Clash of Clans. Both games also share a similar gameplay style.

Before each battle, players are required to arrange an eight-card deck, which is used to attack and defend against opponents. At the beginning of the battle, the game chooses four random cards from the deck. Once a card is played, a new one is automatically drawn. The cards are categorized according to their rarity levels – Common, Rare, Epic – and each of them costs a certain amount of elixir points.

At the start of the battle, players have five elixir points, and one point is replenished every 2.8 seconds to a maximum of ten elixir points. During the last 60 seconds of regular time and overtime, the points generation rate is doubled and tripled, respectively. When it was launched, Clash Royale had 42 cards, with 14 cards designated for each rarity level. As of April 2025, the game offers a total of 119 cards distributed across five levels of rarity.

Players can also join different clans in the game, allowing them to engage in friendly battles or to participate in wars against rival clans. Players with an experience level of 3 and above can request or donate cards from other clan members. Level 8 players can use the in-game tokens to trade cards with players in rival clans.

Trade tokens are obtained by winning trophies, completing challenges, and can also be bought from the in-game marketplace. The tokens available on Clash Royale are Common, Rare, Epic, and Legendary, and each of them can be used to trade a certain number of cards.
